Big Brothers Big Sister Quesnel is this year’s focus of the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign.

Between April 29 and May 5, all funds raised from the cookie sales locally will go toward the organization.

Executive director Joanie Newman is also smiling about the campaign.

“It’s the first time we have been the recipients,” she told the Observer Thursday, April 25.

Since BBBS lost its eligibility for gaming funds this year, Newman has been constantly making applications to find other funding sources, which led to her making an application to Tim Hortons.

“The smile campaign is fantastic for us. It will really help,” she said.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the smile campaign will go to BBBS which will be then used toward group outings and their community mentoring program.

Presently there are seven matches of bigs with littles and another 24 youth on the waiting list, she said.

Established in 1978, BBBS has been in Newman’s heart since she became involved in 1998.

Born and raised in Quesnel, she started out as a board member, was later the treasurer for years, a big sister and a school mentor.

In 2011 she went to work in the office.

“I believe in the organization. It does make a difference,” she said.
