The new Carson Elementary school had its groundbreaking Wednesday (May 29th).

The groundbreaking was attended by members of the Lhtako Dene Nation who blessed the land with a smudging ceremony.

“With this blessing comes our responsibility as a school district to be positive stewards of this land and take responsibility for the students and their future while on this land,” said School Trustee Lisa Boudreau at the groundbreaking.

The new 16-classroom school which will have an added on daycare centre will be located at Nadeau Street and Johnston Avenue. The school is expected to be completed by fall 2025.

The old Carson Elementary school replacement follows a 2021 landslide which made part of the building unsafe. A portion of that school has been closed to students and staff while four portables were added to its back field to replace the unavailable classrooms.

The ministry of education announced $2.1 million to buy land for the new school in 2022. It added up to $61 million in funding for construction of the school and daycare in 2023.
